Water Cremation

Simple Water Cremation $5200 inc.

A simple water cremation is when you would simply like your loved one transferred from place of death (Nelson, Tasman, Marlborough) and the cremation to take place.

Cremation Care in partnership with Christchurch Water Crematorium and is proud to offer New Zealand’s most environmentally conscious cremation option through water cremation, also known as alkaline hydrolysis.

What Is Water Cremation?

Water cremation is a gentle alternative to traditional flame cremation. It uses a combination of water, a small amount of natural alkaline solution, warmth, and circulation to accelerate the natural process that occurs after burial.

How the Process Works

  • Your loved one is placed in a specialised water cremation chamber.

  • A solution of approximately 95% water and 5% alkaline solution is introduced.

  • With gentle heat, the natural process is carefully accelerated in a respectful and controlled environment.

  • At the completion of the process, only the mineral bone remains are left.

  • These remains are dried and returned to the family as a fine, clean white ash, suitable for scattering, burial, or keeping in an urn — just as with traditional cremation.

Why Choose Water Cremation?

  • Environmentally responsible – Significantly lower carbon emissions than flame cremation.

  • No direct flames – A gentler, more natural process.

  • Reduced environmental impact – No airborne mercury emissions.

  • Energy efficient – Uses less energy than conventional cremation methods.

At Cremation Care, we understand the importance of honouring your loved one in a way that reflects your values. Water cremation provides a respectful, sustainable choice while still allowing families the same memorial traditions and options they are familiar with.

Funerals don’t have to cost the earth to mean so much.
